Highly structured materials for upgraded biogas and storage (2016-2021)

The vision of HiGradeGas is to overcome the barriers towards a wide-spread and sustainable use of biogas in the Danish energy system by improving the cost efficiency of (i) biogas upgrading (removal of CO2 from biogas) and (ii) methane storage. The project will facilitate the use of biogas as a versatile fuel that can be stored and used for transport or injected into the gas net, and thereby increase the flexibility of future renewable energy systems in Denmark. HiGradeGas proposes an innovative concept in which adsorbents are nanostructured by advanced shaping technology. For biogas upgrading, adsorbents will be granulated or electrospun into 3-dimensional nanofiber network to improve upgrading performance, allowing a more than 20 % reduction of cost for small scale industrial pressure swing adsorption units. Moreover, the knowledge developed during electrospinning can be directly utilized to structure nanofiber adsorbents on a conductive substrate and form a concept device for biogas storage. Such a device will enable the low pressure adsorption of biomethane, improve gas diffusion and heat transfer and thereby enable faster gas adsorption/desorption cycles in an electrical swing adsorption unit. Worldwide recognized research groups and industrial partners who are playing leading roles in biogas upgrading and storage, advanced shaping and technology exploration join their core expertise and ensure the implementation of project results into industrial applications as well as a much stronger role of biogas in the future Danish energy system.
